Stump Grinding and Stump Removal Cost in the NC Piedmont

Stump grinding is the removal of the visible stump. A grinder with a rotating cutting wheel chews the stump down to somewhere between four and twelve inches below grade, turns it into chips, and leaves the root system in the ground to rot out over the next several years. The hole gets backfilled with the grindings or with soil, and the surface is usable again fairly quickly.

Stump removal is the removal of the stump and the root ball. On most of our jobs that means an excavator with a thumb or a bucket getting under the root flare and lifting the whole mass out of the ground, roots attached. It leaves a real hole that has to be filled and compacted, and it produces a pile of wood and dirt that has to go somewhere.

Which one you need depends entirely on what happens next on that spot. A stump in the middle of a lawn only needs grinding. A stump inside a future driveway, building pad, septic field, pond dam or fence line needs to come out completely, because rotting roots underneath compacted fill will settle and take your finished surface down with them. We publish our stump grinding prices instead of making you ask. Grinding is charged per stump by the diameter measured across the widest point of the root flare, with hardwood (oak, hickory, maple, sweetgum) priced about 20 percent above softwood (pine, cedar) because it is slower and harder on cutting teeth. A stump under 12 inches is $34 softwood or $41 hardwood ground to standard depth. Most residential hardwood stumps measure 18 to 30 inches, which is $163 to $254 standard depth or $228 to $356 when we grind deep below the surface for reseeding or sod.

On top of grinding, every job carries a mobilization charge of $100 plus $2 per mile, with mileage rounded up to the nearest 10 miles from our Rural Hall, NC yard. A 20 mile job is $140 of mobilization, a 40 mile job is $180. There is a $225 minimum for any stump visit, so a single small stump close to home prices out at the minimum rather than at the table rate.

Chips are the other variable. Spreading the grindings around the hole is included at no charge. Piling them somewhere on the property is $25 plus $25 per cubic yard of material. Hauling them off site is $225 plus $35 per cubic yard. If you want the holes filled with clean dirt and graded so they can be seeded immediately, that is $225 plus $65 per cubic yard, and it requires the chips to be piled or hauled first. Full excavator removal of a root ball, extensive lateral root systems, and stumps standing more than 12 inches above grade are quoted on the walk-through instead of from the table.

Volume works in your favor because the mobilization charge is paid once no matter how many stumps are on the ticket. Ten mid-size hardwood stumps ground deep 20 miles out is roughly $2,280 of grinding plus $140 of mobilization, and the per stump number lands near $242 rather than the $365 a single stump of that size would cost on its own visit. Full excavator removal is a different structure. Because it is machine and operator time plus hauling, it is quoted after a walk-through, along with any hand work beyond standard cleanup at $115 per hour. A single large oak root ball pulled, hauled and backfilled commonly lands between $450 and $1,200, and clearing stumps across an acre of previously cut ground generally runs $2,500 to $6,500 per acre depending on stump count, size and haul distance.

Diameter is the headline number, but it is not the biggest driver on most Piedmont properties. Two identical thirty inch oak stumps can be a $200 job and an $800 job depending on everything around them.

Access comes first. A stump twelve feet from a gate on flat ground is quick. The same stump behind a fence, on a slope, between a septic tank and a retaining wall, or reachable only by carrying equipment through a back yard, costs multiples more because the crew spends most of the visit getting to it and protecting what is nearby.

Soil and species matter too. Red clay packed around a root flare wears cutting teeth faster than sandy loam, and our Piedmont clay is rarely kind to equipment. Species with wide plate roots like oak, hickory and sweetgum take longer than pine. And any stump that has had years of dirt, gravel or rock washed against it will slow a grinder down significantly, because rock is what actually kills grinder teeth.

• Proximity to fences, irrigation, septic components, utilities and hardscape
• Species and root structure: taproot species grind faster than plate root species
• Embedded rock, gravel, concrete, old fence wire and nails
• Whether the grindings stay onsite or get hauled away
• Number of stumps and whether they are grouped or scattered

On acreage work we usually recommend taking the tree and its root system out in one pass rather than cutting the tree, waiting, and grinding the leftover stump later. With an excavator we get under the root plate and push the tree over so it comes out with the ball attached. That eliminates the stump entirely instead of creating one, and it is normally cheaper than paying twice.

The savings come from equipment cycles. When a stump is ground later, the site has to be mobilized again, the grinder has to be walked back to every location, and the roots are still in the ground. Pushing the tree out at clearing time uses a machine that is already onsite and already positioned, which is why it shows up as a lower total on jobs we quote through land clearing and site preparation.

It also produces better ground. Removing the root mass before grading means the pad or driveway is built on soil that will not decompose later. That matters most for anything that will carry weight or hold water.

Take a common job: a homeowner outside Winston-Salem had six trees taken down by a tree service and was left with six stumps between sixteen and thirty four inches. Four sit in open lawn. One sits three feet off a driveway edge. One sits inside the footprint of a future gravel parking pad.

Call the four lawn stumps two at 18 to 24 inches and two at 24 to 30 inches, all hardwood, ground deep so the yard can be reseeded. From the table that is $228 plus $228 plus $356 plus $356, which is $1,168 of grinding. The property sits 25 miles out, so mobilization rounds to 30 miles and adds $160. Chips spread on site are included, so those four stumps come to $1,328.

The stump beside the driveway is the same 24 to 30 inch band at $356, but the pavement edge means slower hand work around the flare, which is quoted separately at $115 per hour. The stump inside the future parking pad footprint does not get ground at all. It gets excavated out with the root ball, the void filled with compacted structural fill, and the wood hauled off, generally $500 to $900 after a walk-through.

Most disputes over stump work come from four things left unwritten. Before you accept any bid, confirm each one appears in writing.

First, grind depth. Four inches below grade is enough for mulch beds. Eight to twelve inches is what you want for lawn or anything getting replanted. Second, what happens to the grindings. Chips left in the hole will settle for a year or two. Hauling them off and bringing in soil costs more but leaves a finished surface. Third, root flare and surface roots. Many quotes cover only the stump and treat radiating surface roots as an extra. Fourth, cleanup and restoration: raking, soil, seed and straw.

You should also confirm who is responsible for locating utilities. In North Carolina, calling 811 before mechanized digging is standard practice for a reason, and it is free. A contractor who shrugs at that question is telling you something about the rest of their process.

Almost every expensive stump problem we get called into started as a reasonable looking decision that skipped a step.

• Grinding stumps under a future driveway, pad or slab, then watching the surface settle in three to five years
• Hiring a tree crew to cut trees flush at ground level, which makes later grinding harder and more expensive than a knee high stump
• Backfilling a removal void with loose spoil instead of compacted structural fill
• Accepting a per stump price with no stated grind depth
• Paying twice on acreage: cutting first, then grinding stumps that could have been pushed out during clearing
• Skipping utility locates in an old yard full of unmarked irrigation, invisible fence and abandoned lines
• Leaving the void unseeded on a slope, which turns a small hole into an erosion channel after the first hard Piedmont rain

The stump is rarely the end of the work. Grindings are acidic and low in nitrogen, so grass planted directly into a pile of chips usually struggles. If you plan to reseed, plan on removing most of the chips and bringing in clean topsoil for the top six inches.

Removal voids need real fill and real compaction, especially anywhere water can collect. On sloped ground a fresh void is the lowest point in the yard until it is graded back in, which is why stump work and grading usually belong on the same visit. Owners fixing multiple issues at once often bundle stumps with land grading or drainage solutions so the finished surface actually sheds water.

If you are clearing several stumps as part of a larger project, sequence matters: stumps out, then rough grade, then drainage, then finish grade and stabilization. Doing it in that order once is cheaper than doing pieces of it three times.

Stump work is local work. Haul distance, dump fees and drive time all land in your price, so a crew already working in Forsyth, Guilford, Stokes, Rockingham, Surry, Davidson, Davie, Yadkin or Alamance County can usually quote a tighter number than one traveling in from two counties away. The same is true across the Virginia line in Carroll, Patrick and Henry County.

Ask whether the person quoting the job will be onsite while it runs. Ask for proof of liability insurance before any machine touches your property. And ask for the quote in writing with the scope items listed above. Those three questions filter out most of the risk.
